This document, AATCC Test Method 176-2011, details a procedure for evaluating the speckiness of colorant dispersions, specifically targeting disperse dyes, vat dyes, and pigments. The method addresses the issue of agglomerates in these dispersions, which can appear as undesirable specks on continuously dyed or printed fabrics, particularly prominent in light or pale shades. The core of the test involves filtering a prepared colorant dispersion through a polyester/cotton blend fabric. Following filtration, the fabric undergoes specific processing steps—drying and thermosoling for disperse dyes, reduction/oxidation for vat dyes, or drying for pigments. The processed fabric is then visually examined, and individual specks are counted to assess the degree of speckiness. Acceptability is determined based on user requirements. The standard also includes definitions, safety precautions, and detailed instructions for apparatus, reagents, and procedural steps.
