AATCC TM8-2016e is a standard test method for determining the colorfastness to crocking, which is the transfer of color from a textile’s surface to another surface by rubbing. The procedure involves rubbing a colored test specimen with a standard white cotton crocking cloth using a specialized device called a Crockmeter. The test is performed under both dry and wet conditions. After the rubbing cycle, the amount of color transferred to the white cloth is evaluated by comparing it against standard visual assessment tools, such as the Gray Scale for Staining or the AATCC 9-Step Chromatic Transference Scale. The result is a numerical grade that quantifies the material’s resistance to color rub-off, a critical quality parameter for apparel, upholstery, and other textile products. The method is not recommended for carpets or very small printed areas, for which other specific standards exist.
